Today, the Supreme Court made history by ordering the adoption of a one-third female reservation in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections.
The esteemed post of SCBA Treasurer will be set aside for a woman beginning with the upcoming 2024–2025 term.
The bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan ordered that, starting with the President for the next term; one office bearer post would be reserved solely for women on a rotating basis.
The Court further mandated that two out of every six members of the senior executive committee and three out of every nine members of the junior executive committee be women.
The Court's dedication to guaranteeing gender equality within the legal profession and its governing bodies is demonstrated by this historic action. The Supreme Court hopes to lead by example and promote more inclusive practices at all judicial and legal community levels by designating a woman for the top position.
The ruling has been praised by legal experts as a major advancement in addressing gender disparities in the legal profession. Many believe that this will open the door for additional changes meant to empower women in the legal field.
With this new directive, it is anticipated that several highly qualified female candidates will run for office in the SCBA, which is scheduled to hold elections in the upcoming months.
