The Supreme Court has denied interim bail to Manish Sisodia, a senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, in relation to the contentious Delhi liquor policy case. The decision was delivered by a Vacation Bench composed of Justices Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta. Despite rejecting the bail plea, the court granted Sisodia the opportunity to renew his request after the final chargesheet, prepared by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), is filed. The investigative agencies have committed to completing their inquiries and submitting the necessary documents to the trial court by July 3, 2024.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Union government and the ED, assured the court of the prompt conclusion of the investigative process. The bench refrained from commenting on the merits of the case but indicated that all legal arguments could be revisited once the final chargesheet is submitted. "We will not comment on the merits of the case. Instead, we will dismiss the current petitions with the liberty to revive your applications post the filing of the chargesheet," Justice Kumar stated, encapsulating the court's position.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Sisodia, expressed concerns over the political sensitivities of the case and the challenges his client faces in securing bail from lower courts. Singhvi argued, "Where do I revive my plea for bail? I have been incarcerated for 15 months already. Let me be very blunt here: trial courts are not equipped to handle cases of such political sensitivity."
