As Chief Justice DY Chandrachud nears the conclusion of his tenure, set to end on November 10, his reflections carry a deeply personal and introspective tone. Speaking at the third convocation ceremony of Jigme Singye Wangchuk School of Law in Bhutan, India's 50th Chief Justice opened up about the uncertainties that accompany the close of his distinguished career.

In his candid address, Chandrachud pondered the legacy he will leave behind, expressing questions that felt both universal and deeply personal: "Did I achieve everything I set out to do? How will history judge my tenure? Could I have done things differently?" His words spoke to the human struggle of looking back on a life's work, not with finality but with curiosity, even vulnerability.

Yet, amid these reflections, Chandrachud's sense of purpose and devotion to his role remained unwavering. He admitted, “Perhaps I will never find answers to some of these questions. However, I do know that, over the last two years, I have woken up every morning with a commitment to give the job my fullest and gone to bed with the satisfaction that I served my country with utmost dedication.” His message, filled with sincerity, speaks not just to his career but to the essence of leadership — the weight of responsibility, the constant self-reflection, and the drive to serve others with honor.

With his characteristic humility, Chandrachud also acknowledged the mix of emotions he now faces, noting his "fear and anxiety" about what the future holds. This honest admission humanizes a man often seen as a towering figure in India's judiciary. He reminded the young graduates, “As you navigate the complexities of your own journeys, do not be afraid to take a step back, reassess, and ask yourself: Am I running towards a destination, or am I running towards myself?”

Throughout his tenure, Chandrachud has been known not only for his landmark rulings on social justice issues but also for his efforts to modernize and make the judiciary more inclusive. His advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community and his push for greater transparency have left indelible marks. Yet, in his speech, it was clear that he measured his success not only by what he achieved in the courtroom but by the values he carried throughout his journey.

As he prepares to step down, Chandrachud’s words serve as a reminder of the humanity behind even the highest of offices — a man who, despite all his accomplishments, remains grounded in reflection and a deep commitment to the future.
