Plea Filed Against PM Modi’s Chadar Offering To Ajmer Sharif Dargah

In a significant and sensitive turn of events in Ajmer, a legal application has been filed seeking to temporarily stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi from presenting a chadar at the revered Ajmer Sharif Dargah during the annual Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Vishnu Gupta, the President of the Hindu Sena, has moved the plea, asserting that such a gesture is inappropriate while the dargah is entangled in a legal dispute over its origins.

 

The lawsuit fueling this plea contends that the dargah stands on what was allegedly a demolished Shiva temple. This claim has rekindled historical and cultural debates about the site's heritage, adding a layer of complexity to an already sensitive matter.

 

Amidst this backdrop, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju recently shared a tweet showing Prime Minister Modi handing over the chadar—a practice upheld by his predecessors. Rijiju praised the gesture as a testament to India’s rich spiritual legacy, underscoring messages of unity and compassion.

 

However, Gupta's plea voices a different perspective. He argues that the government’s involvement in offering the chadar could influence the ongoing trial and compromise judicial independence. According to him, it might obstruct the legal process and risk rendering the case meaningless.

 

The petition requests the central government to refrain from offering the chadar this year, emphasizing the need for impartiality given the site's contentious status.
