Ajmer's District Bar Association has filed a petition to stop the filming of the upcoming Bollywood movie "Jolly LLB 3," citing issues with the way the legal profession and the judiciary are portrayed. On May 10, the North Ajmer Judicial Magistrate and Civil Judge will consider the plea.
The film's principal actors, Arshad Warsi and Akshay Kumar, as well as director Subhash Kapoor, were represented by attorneys during the Wednesday court session. The team behind the film is represented by an advocate from Jaipur.
"People will think that a judge eats gutkha and advocates fight for fees with clients, which is not the reality," said Chandra Rathore, President of the District Bar Association, in response to the lawyers' worries. According to the association, the movie misrepresents legal professionals and could tarnish the public image of the judiciary.
The petition also challenges to the Divisional Railway Manager's (DRM) office being used for filming scenes, arguing that a public office should not be used for such purposes. The petition should be dismissed, according to the railways' advocate, and more time to submit a formal response has been asked by the producer of the movie.
This legal battle brings to light persistent disagreements about how the judiciary is portrayed in movies between the legal community and the film industry. Like its predecessors, "Jolly LLB 3" seeks to offer a satirical look at the Indian legal system, but it has drawn criticism for how it portrays judges and their environments.
