Supreme Court Investigates Cash Discovery at Justice Yashwant Varma’s Residence
A high-level in-house committee, set up by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, has begun investigating the unexpected discovery of a large sum of cash at the residence of Supreme Court Justice Yashwant Varma. The probe was initiated after a fire broke out at his Delhi home on March 14, leading firefighters to uncover the cash stash.
The Investigation Begins
The three-member panel—comprising Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice G.S. Sandhawalia (Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court)—visited Justice Varma’s residence today around 1 PM. Their visit, lasting approximately 45 minutes, marks a crucial phase in the inquiry.
The Controversy
Justice Varma and his wife were traveling in Madhya Pradesh when the fire broke out, leaving only his daughter and elderly mother at home. The discovery of the cash has since fueled allegations of corruption, though Justice Varma firmly denies any wrongdoing, calling it a conspiracy to malign him.
CJI's Swift Action
In a prompt response, Chief Justice Khanna set up the committee on March 22 to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. To maintain public trust, the judiciary has shared a video of the cash recovery—originally sent by the Delhi Police Commissioner—on the Supreme Court’s official website, along with a report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and Justice Varma’s official response.
As the probe unfolds, all eyes are on the committee’s findings, which will shape the next course of action in this high-profile case.
