Delhi High Court Pushes for Timely Decision on Minimum Stipend for Junior Lawyers

In a significant development, the Delhi High Court has directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to address a petition concerning the provision of a minimum stipend for junior lawyers within six weeks. This directive came during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Simran Kumart, who is challenging the current stipend policies for junior lawyers employed by senior advocates.

The Division Bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, stressed the urgency of the issue, highlighting the need for a swift resolution by the BCI. "This can't be kept pending. It needs to be decided. BCI must take a decision in the matter. Please decide it in six weeks," the court emphasized during the proceedings.

Additionally, the court requested the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) to submit its recommendations to the BCI within two weeks, aiming to enrich the decision-making process with a variety of perspectives.

This ruling underscores the court's commitment to ensuring fair compensation for junior lawyers and seeks to address long-standing concerns about their financial stability.
