In a significant ruling, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, has ordered Decathlon, the popular sports retailer, to pay Rs 35,000 in compensation to a customer after failing to deliver trekking trousers worth Rs 1,399. The decision, delivered by the consumer court's president, Somastekarappa Handigola, mandates a full refund of the purchase price along with Rs 25,000 for service deficiencies and Rs 10,000 to cover legal costs.
The complaint was brought forward by Mahith, a 23-year-old from Mangaluru, who purchased a pair of Forclaz Trekking Trousers MT-500 on December 22 of last year. Since the product was only available at Decathlon's ETA Mall store in Bengaluru, Mahith was instructed to pay online, with the promise of home delivery. After making the Rs 1,399 payment, however, Mahith never received the trousers.
Frustrated by the lack of delivery, Mahith made multiple trips to the ETA Mall store and countless follow-up calls, trying to resolve the issue. His persistence was met with little more than a notice informing him that the store had closed, with no mention of a refund. When his efforts went unanswered, Mahith eventually issued a legal notice in April. Decathlon’s lackluster response failed to resolve the matter, leading him to seek legal recourse.
In its verdict, the consumer court acknowledged the retailer's failure to provide proper service and awarded Mahith compensation, underscoring the importance of consumer rights and holding companies accountable for their commitments.
