Calcutta HC Bar Associations Oppose Justice Sharma’s Transfer Amid Allegations
In an unprecedented move, three prominent bar associations of the Calcutta High Court have urged the Chief Justice of India to reconsider the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation to transfer Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court. Their joint representation questions whether the transfer is a routine administrative step or a veiled disciplinary action.
The bar bodies highlight serious allegations against Justice Sharma, citing complaints from late 2024 that accused him of hastily marking high-value commercial cases as "part heard" to retain control over them. A whistleblower’s email to the Delhi High Court Chief Justice even listed cases involving major corporations, suggesting an irregular pattern in case assignments.
The associations also criticized a recurring trend of transferring judges to Calcutta just before retirement, calling the practice detrimental to the administration of justice. They urged the Collegium to either reconsider Justice Sharma’s transfer or bring back judges originally from Calcutta High Court to strengthen its judiciary.
Meanwhile, another transfer has stirred controversy—Justice Yashwant Varma’s move from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court. The Allahabad and Oudh Bar Associations have strongly opposed it, citing his alleged involvement in a "cash at home" controversy. While the Centre has notified his transfer, the Supreme Court has directed the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice not to assign him any judicial work until further orders.
