In a notable ruling, a Bareilly court in Uttar Pradesh sentenced Mohammad Alam, a Muslim man, to life imprisonment for repeatedly assaulting a Hindu woman under the pretext of "Love Jihad." Additional Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar stated that some Muslim men exploit deceitful relationships to target Hindu women for religious conversion.
The case involved Alam introducing himself as "Anand" to the victim at a coaching center, gaining her trust, and assaulting her under the false promise of marriage. He recorded the act, using the video to blackmail her into further assaults. When the woman became pregnant, she was coerced into an abortion and pressured to convert to Islam. After refusing, she faced physical abuse from Alam and his family.
In his 42-page judgment, Judge Diwakar described "Love Jihad" as part of a larger scheme aimed at converting vulnerable Hindu women, warning of potential societal harm if not addressed by the government. The case underscores the need for vigilance against such exploitation.
