March 14, 2025: Fire Leads to Stunning Discovery

 

Late at night on March 14, a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi. The Delhi Fire Services responded to an emergency call and extinguished the flames, which reportedly started in a storeroom. While no casualties were reported, firefighters allegedly stumbled upon ?15 crore in unaccounted cash during their operation.

 

March 15-16, 2025: Conflicting Reports & Rising Allegations

 

As news of the cash discovery spread, conflicting statements emerged. The Delhi Fire Services Chief Atul Garg later clarified that he had never stated cash was not found, adding to the uncertainty. Meanwhile, speculation grew about Justice Varma’s potential involvement in financial irregularities.

 

March 21, 2025: Allahabad HC Bar Association Protests Transfer

 

Adding fuel to the fire, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA) strongly opposed Justice Varma’s rumored transfer, calling it an attempt to “dump” a tainted judge. HCBA President Anil Tiwari criticized the move, warning that lawyers would go on strike if the transfer was finalized.

 

March 22, 2025: Inquiry Ordered & Video Evidence Released

 

In response to the growing crisis, CJI Sanjiv Khanna formed a three-member inquiry panel comprising senior judges from Punjab & Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka High Courts to investigate the allegations. At the same time, the Supreme Court took the unprecedented step of releasing video evidence, confirming the cash recovery. Justice Varma was barred from handling any judicial work until further notice.
