The Supreme Court has launched an in-house inquiry against Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma after a significant amount of unaccounted cash was discovered at his residence. The revelation came under unusual circumstances—a fire broke out at his home, and firefighters, while responding to the emergency, stumbled upon the stash, according to The Times of India.

In response, the Supreme Court Collegium initially moved to transfer Justice Varma back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. However, in a full court meeting held on Friday morning, the judges unanimously agreed that a mere transfer would not suffice, given the gravity of the situation. Instead, they opted for a formal in-house investigation, even as his transfer awaits government approval.

Justice Varma was notably absent from court proceedings today, with his staff citing leave. The sudden turn of events has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity, raising serious questions about judicial accountability.

Born in 1969, Justice Varma pursued his law degree at Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and began practicing in 1992. Over the years, he built a distinguished career, serving as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and later as Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh. Recognized for his legal acumen, he was designated a Senior Advocate in 2013 and appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014. His tenure as a permanent judge began in 2017, and he was transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021.

Now, however, his decades-long career stands under scrutiny. What began as an emergency call for a house fire has escalated into a full-fledged judicial crisis—one that will test the integrity of the system he once served.
