A Mumbai sessions court recently reinforced the importance of respecting personal boundaries in digital communication by upholding the conviction of a man who sent unsolicited WhatsApp messages to a former corporator. The messages, sent between 11 PM and 12:30 AM, included comments about the woman's appearance, inquiries about her marital status, and personal expressions of interest.

In its ruling, Additional Sessions Judge D.G. Dhoble of the Dindoshi Sessions Court deemed the messages obscene, applying contemporary community standards to assess their impact. The court noted that no married woman, especially one in public life, would find such messages acceptable—particularly from someone she had no prior acquaintance with.

The accused, who had been sentenced to three months of imprisonment by a magistrate court in 2022, attempted to argue that he was being framed due to political rivalry. However, the court dismissed this claim, emphasizing that no woman would put her dignity on the line to falsely implicate someone.

By upholding the conviction, the court has sent a strong message about the need for respectful digital interactions and the consequences of violating a woman's personal space. This case serves as a reminder that unwanted advances, even in virtual spaces, can have real-world legal consequences.
