Starting June 1, 2024, the process for obtaining a driving license in India is set to undergo a major transformation. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is introducing new regulations that allow driving tests to be conducted at privately operated training centers, moving away from the traditional reliance on Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). This change is aimed at streamlining the licensing process and enhancing overall efficiency.

Applicants now have the flexibility to submit their license applications either online via the Parivahan website or in person at their local RTO. The application fees will vary depending on the type of license sought. Under the new system, once individuals pass their driving tests at these authorized private centers, they will receive certificates. However, they will still need to visit an RTO to submit the necessary documentation and demonstrate their driving skills in person.

To maintain high standards of quality and safety, private driving schools must adhere to strict requirements. These include owning at least one acre of land for general training purposes and two acres for training with four-wheel vehicles. Additionally, these facilities must be well-equipped, and trainers must possess a minimum of a high school diploma and five years of driving experience.

This shift to private centers is expected to make the licensing process more accessible and efficient for applicants, reducing the long wait times often experienced at RTOs.
